Style Stories: Laura Nolan Horgan, Interiors Maven

Founder of one of our favourite shops LNH Edit, a treasure trove of homewares that also boasts a slow fashion range, Laura Nolan Horgan nails effortless summer style. Here she shares her tips for an easy, breezy – and sophisticated – season

I’m always influenced by undone style. Growing up, I was obsessed with Nicole Appleton in the All Saints. I just loved how effortlessly ‘cool’ she was; I used to try and recreate her outfits. To this day, I still dress everything down; I don’t wear high heels, the most expensive dresses in my wardrobe are worn with flats or trainers, and yet I love nothing more than a maximalist room: think English countryside meets The Hamptons.

My aesthetic is probably best defined as eclectic: the wisteria in Bridgerton haunts my dreams; equally the way Sienna Miller wears hard leathers with soft tulle instantly makes me want to change whatever I'm wearing at that moment. I adore Melissa Wood-Tepperberg (Instagram @melissawoodtepperbeg), as well as Molly Sims (Instagram @mollybsims).

My taste in homewares and fashion is different but the one thing that applies to both is pops of colour or touches of print. I live in our printed maxi dresses; they are a go-to item in my wardrobe that I'll wear with runners and a casual jacket. Funnily, the same print I could happily have in a cushion: there definitely is crossover. I find it easier to pull a fashion look together, though. I think I have found my groove and, maybe as I'm older now, I'm a lot more comfortable in my own skin. Pulling a room together however, mixing colours and prints, takes me a little longer to get right. I love the challenge though and I'm always looking forward to a new project.

Most sentimental items of jewellery? I have a beautiful white gold diamond cross my mum gave me on my wedding day that I always wear and I also have two gold tennis bracelets from my dad, plus my wedding ring, which I never take off. To this day, I still adore my engagement ring: my husband picked it himself. It’s a simple solitaire diamond, set quite low which I love, and it only has four clasps which is stunning. It gives it a softer look, it’s set like a cushion stone.

I never worry about my jewellery matching perfectly. I love mixing gold and silver together. When you have a few beautiful pieces as a base, it's so easy to layer them up with costume jewellery, it enhances them.

Four years on from lockdown, the trend for ‘tablescaping’ has changed. It’s very much an everyday look now – people aren't saving their good napkins for Christmas. My advice for keeping things fresh? Don't buy a whole matching look. Only put things you love on the table: your favourite flowers, maybe it's an old set of plates that have been handed down to you. Mix in old and new and make it yours.

My ideal summer picnic is: on a beach in Donegal with my husband, kids, a good book, some smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels (a great trick is to lay an old picnic blanket you might have and layer it with a tablecloth. We also still have some bamboo melamine plates available; these seriously elevate the picnic stakes) stripey fluffy towels, some warm sun, cold swims, sandy toes, salty hair and staying there until the sun is setting. The dream!

My alfresco dining hack is: an LED light bulb popped into a wine bottle with one of our mini lampshades on top. A lot of the portable LED lamps are beautiful but can be so expensive: using the bulbs with a little lampshade is brilliant and you can pop it anywhere in your home. Lighting honestly makes the biggest difference to any space, on or off a table. I can't have enough lamps.
